The Technical Engineering College in Najaf, Al-Furat Al-Awsat Technical University, discussed a master’s thesis titled:
“Investigation of Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) Based 5G Standards”
by the researcher Zahraa Qasim Heban from the Department of Communication Engineering Technologies.
The thesis aims to develop efficient techniques to reduce the Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) in GFDM systems to meet the requirements of fifth-generation (5G) networks in terms of speed, spectral efficiency, and flexibility in resource allocation.
With the advancement of wireless communication technologies, it has become necessary to overcome the limitations of traditional OFDM techniques. Therefore, Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) has emerged as a promising candidate due to its ability to reduce Out-of-Band (OOB) radiation and improve spectral efficiency, especially in fragmented spectrum environments.
The researcher concluded that optimization algorithms such as IPTS, GD, SA, PSO, and OPTS offer significant improvements in reducing PAPR. However, the proposed hybrid PSO-SA algorithm showed the highest efficiency by combining the global search capability of PSO with the local optimization efficiency of SA, resulting in the lowest PAPR while maintaining Bit Error Rate (BER) performance within acceptable limits.
The performance of the proposed PAPR reduction algorithms was evaluated using multiple metrics, including Peak-to-Signal Ratio (PSR), Power Spectral Density (PSD), along with BER and computational complexity. Simulations were carried out using MATLAB R2023a.
